On 23 June 2023, the Net-Zero-2050 consortium met for the kick-off of the second project phase in Hamburg at GERICS. For Net-Zero-2050, Cluster I of the Helmholtz Climate Initiative, the second phase had begun in March 2023. The researchers travelled from Berlin (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin), Leipzig (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ), Jülich (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and Stuttgart (German Aerospace Center (DLR)). In addition, researchers from Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and Dresden (Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf) participated online.

In the second phase of Net-Zero-2050, the work from the first phase will be continued - scientists from a total of eight Helmholtz Centres are involved. The cluster is coordinated by the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. The focus of this second phase is on interaction with stakeholders: In order to move forward with the implementation of negative emission options, the necessary measures need to be considered and discussed with the relevant stakeholders. This project phase aims to initiate and stimulate a necessary political and societal debate on CO2 use and storage in Germany through strong stakeholder engagement.

The on-site meeting in Hamburg started with an external presentation by Aysel Aliyeva from the Zentrum Liberale Moderne. She is the project coordinator of the project "Stakeholder Dialogues Carbon Management - Negative Emissions". Afterwards, information was provided on the current status of the work and the strategic approach and work steps for the first joint publication in the summer were discussed. It was a lively and fruitful exchange. Finally, upcoming events and projects were discussed. These include the formation of the new Negative Emissions Network, which aims to connect researchers as well as different stakeholders to promote exchange on the topic of negative emissions.
